It’s a professional real-time subdivision plugin for Unreal Engine that brings the same high-quality surface subdivision film and VFX pipelines have used for decades into your real-time projects. Characters and assets stay smooth and detailed at any distance, no more faceting, no more baking out heavy pre-subdivided meshes just to hit the visual bar.
What makes this a step change: it’s built on OpenSubdiv, Pixar’s open-source subdivision library, running the same Catmull-Clark technology used across film and VFX production. That’s the same underlying tech powering the offline renderers on Pixar and Disney productions, now running live in Unreal at frame rate.
Real-time engines have always had a rough deal with subdivision. Offline renderers subdivide meshes at render time, which is why film frames never look blocky. Real-time did not have that option, until now. The workaround for the past decade has been to bake subdivision into your mesh before import. That ships a dense, static, high poly asset that bloats memory, locks down your topology, and makes iteration expensive.
Squarebit Subdivs changes the pipeline. Import your base cage mesh, subdivide it live in the engine, and get film-grade smoothness in real time while keeping your source assets light and easy to iterate on. Change the cage in DCC, re-export, and you’re done. No re-baking, no re-authoring.
The workflow is deliberately simple. Your DCC exports the base cage mesh at whatever density feels right for iteration (usually a low-to-medium poly control cage). Unreal imports the base mesh as normal. Squarebit Subdivs then subdivides the mesh at runtime, applying after skinning and blendshape deformation, so animated characters get the same smoothing treatment as static assets.
Adaptive levels mean the plugin subdivides more aggressively when the camera is close and pulls back when it’s far, so you get the visual quality you want without wasting frame budget on off-screen or distant assets.
