Kong Maya Rig: Free King Kong Creature Rig by Mrinal Soni
If you’ve ever wanted to animate the king of the apes in Maya, this is the rig for you. Mrinal Soni has put together a free Kong Maya rig built on Advanced Skeleton 6, with a facial setup done in mGear, giving you the kind of weight, scale, and silhouette you need to actually land a Kong shot. It’s the natural companion piece to his Godzilla rig, and animators who want to push into giant-character work are going to love it.
Kong is one of those characters every animator wants to take a swing at. The scale is enormous but the performance lives in the small stuff: the way he shifts weight onto a knuckle, the way the face moves between threat and curiosity, the way the eyes carry the performance. This rig handles all of that. The body deforms cleanly, the arms and legs have proper IK/FK switching for both knuckle-walking and upright posing, and the mGear-driven facial setup gives you the range to land roars, snarls, and the quiet moments that make Kong feel like a character instead of just a monster.
The Kong Maya rig is great for
- Creature animation studies and giant-character weight work
- Kaiju and monster animation reel pieces (pair it with Mrinal’s Godzilla rig for the obvious matchup)
- Body mechanics on a huge, asymmetric ape proportion
- Practising knuckle-walking locomotion, climbing, and ground reaction on a massive character
- Acting beats and facial performance on a non-humanoid face
- Personal short film projects and animation challenges
