The story behind the Godzilla rig

A free Godzilla rig for kaiju animation in Maya

Godzilla is one of those characters every animator wants to take a swing at. The proportions are huge, but the performance has to feel weighty and deliberate, and that is what Mrinal Soni built this rig to handle.

The body deforms cleanly, the limbs switch between IK and FK for the poses kaiju animation lives on, and the facial setup gives you enough range for the quiet beats between the destruction. A tail-driven creature this size is a hard test of weight, balance and ground reaction, which is exactly why it is worth practising on.
