About this rig

Rocky, Project Hail Mary, mGear 5 Maya rig

Rocky is the Eridian from Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary, now on screen in the Amazon MGM Studios film. This is the official 3D printable model of Rocky, tweaked so it deforms in a rig and built on mGear 5 by Emilio Serrano. It is free.

3D STL model courtesy of MGM Amazon: the official Project Hail Mary 3D model.

A super charming five-armed creature with animatable top rocks, ideal for body mechanics and creature studies. The rig comes with two biomes: a sphere and a portable dodecahedron. The sphere has auto-roll rigging, so it rolls as you move it.

What you get

  • The tweaked STL model as a Maya scene
  • Five arms and the top rocks, all animatable
  • The sphere biome with auto-roll
  • The portable dodecahedron biome

Who it is for

Animators after a creature that is not a biped. Rocky has five limbs and no face, so posture and rhythm do all the acting. That makes him a good test of weight, timing and appeal, for a creature reel or a scene from the book or the film.

Requirements

  • Maya 2024 or newer
  • mGear 5, installed and loaded
  • No facial rig and no props. Rocky has no face, and the biomes are part of the rig.
Questions

Common questions about Rocky, Project Hail Mary (Maya Rig)

Do I need mGear to use the Rocky rig?

Yes. The rig is built on mGear 5, which is free and open source. Install mGear 5 in Maya 2024 or newer, load it, then open the scene.

Is this the official Rocky model from Project Hail Mary?

The mesh is the official 3D printable model of Rocky released by Amazon MGM for the film, tweaked by Emilio Serrano so it deforms well in a rig.

What are the two biomes?

A sphere and a portable dodecahedron, the environments Rocky lives in aboard the ship. The sphere has auto-roll rigging, so it rolls as you move it.

Does Rocky have a facial rig?

No. Rocky has no face, which is the fun of animating him: everything reads through the five arms, the top rocks and posture.

Which Maya version does the Rocky rig need?

Maya 2024 or newer with mGear 5 loaded. It was built and tested in Maya 2024.
