Squarebit Subdivs

Squarebit Subdivs is a real-time subdivision plugin for Unreal Engine by Squarebit LLC. Built on Pixar OpenSubdiv, it brings Catmull-Clark film-grade smoothing into Unreal at runtime, applying after deformation so skinned characters and blendshape-driven assets stay smooth without baking. GPU-driven, adaptive to camera distance, and iteration friendly. Per-seat licensing (monthly / annual / studio). By Squarebit Studios.

Price range: £25.00 through £250.00

Monthly £25.00 per seat / month

Squarebit Subdivs for Unreal Engine: Real-Time Film-Grade Subdivision by Squarebit

If you’ve ever imported a character or asset into Unreal and watched what looked crisp in Maya turn into a faceted low-poly mess on screen, you know exactly the problem Squarebit Subdivs is here to solve. It’s a professional real-time subdivision plugin for Unreal Engine that brings the same high-quality surface subdivision film and VFX pipelines have used for decades into your real-time projects. Characters and assets stay smooth and detailed at any distance, no more faceting, no more baking out heavy pre-subdivided meshes just to hit the visual bar.

What makes this a step change: it’s built on OpenSubdiv, Pixar’s open-source subdivision library, running the same Catmull-Clark technology used across film and VFX production. That’s the same underlying tech powering the offline renderers on Pixar and Disney productions, now running live in Unreal at frame rate.

Why the Unreal Engine subdivision plugin matters

Real-time engines have always had a rough deal with subdivision. Offline renderers subdivide meshes at render time, which is why film frames never look blocky. Real-time did not have that option, until now. The workaround for the past decade has been to bake subdivision into your mesh before import. That ships a dense, static, high poly asset that bloats memory, locks down your topology, and makes iteration expensive.

Squarebit Subdivs changes the pipeline. Import your base cage mesh, subdivide it live in the engine, and get film-grade smoothness in real time while keeping your source assets light and easy to iterate on. Change the cage in DCC, re-export, and you’re done. No re-baking, no re-authoring.

Key features

  • Film-quality smoothing: Catmull-Clark subdivision, the same approach offline renderers use, running live in engine so surfaces and silhouettes stay smooth at any distance
  • No more baking: Ship the base cage and subdivide it at runtime. Keep source assets light and iterable
  • Built for real time: GPU-driven subdivision tuned for Unreal, with adaptive levels that scale to camera distance and frame budget
  • Animation-ready: Subdivision applies after deformation, so skinned and blendshape-driven characters stay smooth without baking out every pose
  • Built on Pixar OpenSubdiv: The same production-hardened subdivision library used across film and VFX
  • Real-time character and asset workflow: Iteration friendly at every stage

Squarebit Subdivs is great for

  • Real-time cinematics that need film-grade character silhouettes
  • Virtual production and LED-wall shoots where camera proximity would normally expose low-poly faceting
  • Games with heavy character focus (cinematic RPGs, narrative games, dialogue-driven experiences)
  • Studios shipping animated content out of Unreal for streaming or film release
  • Pipelines that need to iterate character topology quickly without re-baking dense meshes
  • Any Unreal project where the visual bar is being pushed towards offline-render quality
  • Animation studios exploring hybrid real-time / offline pipelines
  • Indie teams who want AAA-grade character silhouettes without a AAA pipeline budget

How Squarebit Subdivs fits your pipeline

The workflow is deliberately simple. Your DCC exports the base cage mesh at whatever density feels right for iteration (usually a low-to-medium poly control cage). Unreal imports the base mesh as normal. Squarebit Subdivs then subdivides the mesh at runtime, applying after skinning and blendshape deformation, so animated characters get the same smoothing treatment as static assets.

Adaptive levels mean the plugin subdivides more aggressively when the camera is close and pulls back when it’s far, so you get the visual quality you want without wasting frame budget on off-screen or distant assets.

Pricing tiers

Squarebit offers three licensing options directly on their site:

  • Monthly: $25 per seat per month. Full subdivision in real time on every seat. Scale seats up or down whenever you need.
  • Annual: $250 per seat per year. Same per-seat licence, billed yearly for the equivalent of two months free.
  • Studio and Enterprise: Custom pricing for studios and larger teams. Includes volume seat pricing, floating-license support for large numbers of render nodes, invoice and PO billing, and priority support.
