Surskit & Pokeball Rig for Maya: Free mGear 5 Character Rig

Surskit & Pokeball Rig for Maya is available on Animworks, a curated collection of professional animation resources. Whether you are working on your first demo reel or looking for a fun character to add to your practice sessions, this free rig gives you a quality setup without any barrier to entry.

Emilio Serrano has taken one of Pokemon’s quirkiest little creatures and turned it into a fully functional mGear 5 Maya rig, complete with a rigged Pokeball that opens, closes, rolls, and squashes independently.

Surskit is an oddball design in the best way: a tiny bug-type Pokemon balanced on long, spindly water-skimming legs with an oversized head and a single antenna horn. That unusual body plan makes it a genuinely interesting animation challenge. The legs offer a ton of room for overlapping action and follow-through, while the compact body and expressive face keep your performances readable and fun.

The Pokeball is not just a static prop. It has its own dedicated rig with hinge controls for the top, mid, and bottom sections, button controls, auto-roll functionality, a squash deformer on the base, and full offset controls. That means you can animate convincing throws, catches, opens, and bounces all within the same scene file.

Both rigs are built on mGear 5 and come with full AnimPicker setups featuring custom background images, making selection and workflow fast and intuitive. FK/IK switching, visibility toggles, and clean control hierarchies are all in place, exactly what you would expect from an Emilio Serrano rig.

A great pick for Pokemon fan animation, creature animation practice, or anyone who wants to explore how non-humanoid rigs behave differently from standard biped setups. The Pokeball adds a prop animation layer that pairs naturally with the character for storytelling shots.

What’s included:

  • Surskit mGear 5 Maya rig
  • Pokeball mGear 5 Maya rig (with open/close hinge, auto-roll, and squash controls)
  • Full AnimPicker with custom background images for both rigs
  • mGear guide, Python and MEL post-scripts
  • Rigged by Emilio Serrano

If you are looking for a free, well-built creature rig that goes beyond the typical biped setup, Surskit & Pokeball is a solid addition to your animation toolkit.
