DuckDeer Rig

DuckDeer Rig by Emilio Serrano

DuckDeer Rig for Maya is a free creature rig of the internet's favourite woodland anomaly: a deer's frame with a duck's bill. Emilio Serrano rigged it on mGear 4.2.9 with his custom spring node and gravity simulation, and tested it in Maya 2024. The model is by Daan van Splunter from a concept by Kyle Cornelius. A good deer rig for anyone who wants to work out non-standard creature locomotion.

DuckDeer Rig is out

Everything the rig ships with. What you get on day one:

Spring node with gravity

Emilio's custom spring node adds gravity-driven secondary motion to the dynamic parts. The node is available on GitHub.

Two versions in the download

DuckDeer_Rig_v_1.0.ma with spring gravity, and DuckDeer_Rig_SpringsOnly_v_1.0.ma for setups without the gravity node.

mGear 4.2.9 guide and post-scripts

The guide and post-scripts come with the rig, so you can see how it was built.

Tested in Maya 2024

Rigged with mGear 4.2.9 and tested in Maya 2024.

The story behind DuckDeer

A duckdeer creature rig that makes you rethink locomotion

The DuckDeer started as Kyle Cornelius' concept and was built in 3D by Daan van Splunter: the graceful frame of a deer with an expressive duck's bill, turned into something entirely its own. It is designed to make animators smile, then make them work out exactly how it moves.

That is the point of animating it. How does a deer-billed quadruped get around its world? Answering that on a character nobody has reference for strengthens your sense of creature timing and weight, and a shot of the DuckDeer going through its paces stands out on a reel.

Emilio Serrano rigged it with the care the design deserves, including his own spring node with gravity simulation for organic secondary motion.
