Acoustic Guitar Rig for Maya: Vibrating Strings by Noah Li
Noah Li (also known as Keyojimbo) is one of those animators who keeps quietly producing the kind of work that ends up on 80 Level. His Acoustic Guitar Rig for Maya is exactly that kind of project. A clean, animator-friendly Maya rig of an acoustic guitar, complete with vibrating strings driven by a 3-frame loop on an animation layer. It’s a properly thoughtful setup.
What I love about this rig is the cleverness of the string vibration. Rather than over-engineering the strings with simulation or complicated procedural setups, Noah uses a 3-frame animation loop on a dedicated animation layer, with the layer’s weight keyed up and down to control how much the strings vibrate. So you can have a quiet hold, a hard strum, or anything in between, all driven by a single weight value. If you want to push it further, Noah suggests adding a few bones to simulate motion blur during the heavier vibrations.
It’s the kind of rig that sits perfectly between technical exercise and a real production-style prop. Whether you’re animating a character playing a song, building a music-driven short film, or just working on prop animation studies, this guitar rig gives you something proper to work with.
The acoustic guitar rig is great for
- Music and instrument animation, character performance with props
- Studying prop animation, weight, and physical character interaction
- Stylised short films where music is part of the storytelling
- Reel pieces involving prop choreography
- Learning techniques like animation-layer driven vibration and motion-blur fakes
- Building a portfolio piece around character-meets-instrument storytelling
Key features
- Clean Maya rig of an acoustic guitar with full body and neck controls
- Vibrating string setup driven by a 3-frame animation layer loop
- Adjustable string vibration intensity via animation layer weight
- Notes from Noah on adding extra bones for motion-blur style enhancements
- Maya-native, no special plugin requirements
