Silky the Jumping Spider: Stylised Maya Rig for Creature Animation
Silky the Jumping Spider by Flavie Delavaux (Flavie DV) is one of the most well-built creature rigs I’ve seen come through the marketplace. It’s stylised, it’s playful, and it handles all the complexity that comes with rigging a jumping spider in a way that just gets out of your way once you sit down to animate.
One of the questions I get the most from animators is “where can I find a creature rig that’s actually fun to use?” That’s a fair question, because so many creature rigs are either over-engineered, locked behind production studios, or feel stiff the moment you start posing them. The Silky jumping spider rig lands in a really nice spot. The controls are intuitive, the personality is already there in the design, and you can push the performance from cute and curious to fast and twitchy in the same shot without fighting the rig.
Why this jumping spider rig is worth a look
Rigging a spider properly is a lot of work. Eight legs, segmented body, multiple eye groups, fine joints, and the whole thing has to deform cleanly when it moves. Flavie has put together a jumping spider rig that handles all of that and still feels approachable. The legs articulate the way you’d expect, the body has the right amount of squash and squish, and the face has enough range to give you proper character moments.
