SyncSketch Alternative: Keyframe, Review Built for Animation
If you are weighing up a SyncSketch alternative, here is a straight comparison rather than a pitch. SyncSketch is the best-known review tool made with animators in mind, and it earned that place over a decade. Animworks Keyframe is our own review tool, built by working animators, currently in closed beta. This page lays out what each does, where SyncSketch is ahead, where Keyframe is, and what each costs, using SyncSketch’s own published pages throughout, read on 26 August 2026.
What SyncSketch is
SyncSketch is a browser-based review tool for visual teams: upload work, draw on frames, leave notes, and review together in a synced session. It supports 3D model review in the browser, has mobile and tablet apps, and has been adopted across games and animation studios for years. Its own pricing page lists an individual plan at $12 a month, team plans above that, and watermarking as an Enterprise feature at $36 a user a month. On paid team plans, the people you invite are counted as collaborators against your plan.
What Keyframe is
Animworks Keyframe is an animation review player that runs in the browser. Frame-accurate notes and drawing at any frame rate, a time sheet on every clip so you can hold and remove frames and retime playback without touching the file, onion skinning and ghosting, guides and masks, versions side by side, and live review calls with camera and mic where one person drives and everyone follows. It plays image sequences properly: EXR, DPX, TIFF, TGA and PNG. Reviewers are free and unlimited, whether they hold an account or arrive on a share link with no account at all.

Where SyncSketch is the better fit
Honestly: if you review 3D models and turnarounds as often as animation, SyncSketch does that today and Keyframe does not yet. If your reviewers live on iPads, SyncSketch has apps and we are browser only. And it is a mature product with years of studio adoption behind it, while Keyframe is in closed beta. We would rather you pick the right tool than our tool.
Where Keyframe is the better fit
If your work is animation, the gaps run the other way. A video file cannot represent an image sequence, and neither can a review tool that will not play one: Keyframe plays EXR, DPX and TIFF sequences frame for frame. The time sheet means notes like “hold this two frames longer” happen on the clip instead of in a comment. Sessions record, so the animator who missed dailies watches the real conversation. And the people who only watch never cost a seat, which is usually most of the room.
SyncSketch pricing, and is SyncSketch free?
From their own site: SyncSketch offers a free tier with limits, an individual plan at $12 a month, and team pricing above that, with watermarking reserved for Enterprise at $36 a user a month. Keyframe’s published launch pricing is £9 a month paid yearly or £12 rolling for one animator, £18 a seat paid yearly for studios, with a 30-day free trial and no card. Pay for a year and three months are free.
Beta members get every Studio feature free while we build, and a founding rate of £5 a month locked for as long as they stay subscribed. If you are moving off SyncSketch, this is the cheap moment to switch.
Join the Keyframe betaEveryone in this category can draw on a frame. What separates the tools is what they know about animation: timing, sequences, and who gets charged. Compare both against your own shots; SyncSketch’s free tier and Keyframe’s beta make that comparison free to run.
About Harvey Newman
I’m Harvey Newman, an Animation Director and game developer with over a decade of experience working across AAA and indie studios. I’ve contributed to titles like Star Wars Battlefront II, Battlefield V, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Dune Awakening, and I’ve spent a lot of time on both sides of the hiring process, creating animation and reviewing showreels. Alongside studio work, I run Anim.works and create courses, tools, and content focused on helping game animators understand what actually matters in production and recruitment. My approach is straightforward and experience-led, no fluff, just practical guidance based on how studios really work.
